THG AU - Katniss genuinely fell in love with Peeta during the Games
Peeta’s hands are coated in flour when I arrive. He wipes a trickle of sweat from his brow, smearing some of the white powder onto his forehead, before looking up to smile at me. “Are we going?” he asks, voice giddy with excitement.
“Are you sure you want to?” I reply, finding it impossible not to smile back, despite my skepticism.
“Of course I’m sure,” he insists. I watch him quietly as he hurriedly rinses his hands in a bucket of water, then unties the stained apron around his waist. “Come on,” he says with a smile, grabbing a pair of blue iced cookies in one hand, and my own hand in his other. I like the way it feels with his hand in mine - palms pressed together, fingers intertwined. He hands me one of the cookies and takes a bite of the other.
“You’re sure you’re sure?” I ask, taking a nibble from my own treat, before tucking the rest into my pocket to bring to Prim later.
He just rolls his eyes and smiles. “I taught you to bake, now you teach me to hunt, that was the deal.”
Before I have time to respond, he kisses me. And just like that night in the cave, all those months ago, this kiss causes a stirring inside my chest and makes me want another
